Okay, so, I saw some guys online doing these awesome “remakes” of, like, super expensive stuff, and I was like, “Why not?” I’m pretty good with my hands, and I’ve always loved messing around with things, building stuff, you know?
So I picked this watch, the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5088/100P-001. This thing is insane. It’s all platinum and has this crazy hand-engraved dial. It’s like a piece of art you wear on your wrist. And it’s not like some old, dusty antique. They’re still making these things, brand new. I looked it up, and you can ask about the price at those fancy watch stores, but, man, be ready for a shock. It’s a serious statement piece, you know? Says you’ve got taste…and a whole lot of cash.
I started by gathering all the information I could find. I watched every video, read every article about it. I needed to know this watch inside and out. What makes it tick, literally.
Getting the Materials
Next up, parts. This was tricky. I couldn’t exactly get the same exact stuff they use, obviously. So I had to find stuff that looked right and would work. It took some searching, let me tell you. I found some decent hands, a dial that I could work with, and a movement that, well, it wasn’t a Patek movement, but it would do the job. The case was a whole other issue. I ended up using a stainless steel one that had a similar shape and size. Not platinum, but hey, it’s a remake, right?
- Dial: I found a blank dial that was the right size.
- Hands: Sourced some hands that looked similar to the original.
- Movement: Used a generic automatic movement.
- Case: Found a stainless steel case with a similar shape.
Putting It All Together
Then came the fun part—assembly. I carefully took apart the movement I had, cleaned it up, and put it back together. It’s amazing how many tiny parts are in these things. Then I started working on the dial. Now, I’m no engraver, but I tried my best to copy the pattern from the original. It’s not perfect, but I think it looks pretty cool. I used some basic engraving tools and a lot of patience. After that, I put the hands on, which was super fiddly, and then the whole thing into the case.
The Result
After all that work, I finally had my own Patek Philippe Calatrava 5088/100P-001 remake. It’s not perfect, of course, not even close to the real deal. But it looks pretty good, if I do say so myself. And it actually works! It tells the time and everything. It was a really fun project, and I learned a ton along the way. If you’re into watches and like a good DIY challenge, I definitely recommend giving something like this a try. Just be prepared to spend a lot of time and maybe get a little frustrated. But it’s worth it in the end, at least for me.
