Hey everyone, it’s your boy back again with another project. This time, I wanted to try my hand at something a little different – remaking a classic, the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227J-001. I’ve always been a fan of these watches, but man, that price tag is a real killer. So, I thought, why not try to make a remake myself?
First things first, I needed to get my hands on a picture of the watch. I ain’t no artist, so I needed something to look at while working. So I searched on google, and I found a lot of nice pictures of this watch. I saved a few good ones to my computer, just to make sure I got all the details right. I looked all over online, checked out a bunch of different online shops.
Finding the Materials
Now, this was the tricky part. I needed to get parts that looked like the real deal but didn’t cost me an arm and a leg. I spent hours online, scrolling through forums, checking out different websites. It was a real pain, to be honest. Some sites had some of the parts, but not all of them. Others had everything but the prices were crazy high.
I finally found a few places that had most of what I needed. I ended up ordering from a couple of different spots, just to get all the right pieces. I got the watch case from one place, the hands from another, and the movement from yet another. It was a bit of a mess, but hey, it’s all part of the fun, right?
Putting It All Together
Once I got all the parts, it was time to start assembling. Now, I ain’t no professional watchmaker, so this was definitely a learning experience. I started by putting the movement into the case. That was pretty straightforward, just had to make sure everything was lined up right and nothing was getting scratched.
Next up were the hands. This was a bit more fiddly. I had to be super careful not to bend or break them. They’re tiny, you know? I used some tweezers and a magnifying glass to get them in place. It took some time, but I got there in the end.
After that, I put on the dial. This was another tricky part. I had to make sure it was centered perfectly, otherwise, the whole thing would look off. I used some special tools to press it down evenly, so it wouldn’t crack or get damaged.
The Finishing Touches
Once the main parts were in place, it was time for the details. I added the little screws, the crown, and all those other tiny bits that make a watch look complete. This was probably the most time-consuming part of the whole process. There are so many small parts, and you gotta make sure they’re all in the right place and tightened just right.
Finally, I put on the strap. I found a pretty decent leather strap online that looked similar to the original. It wasn’t exactly the same, but it was close enough for my liking. I attached it to the case, and boom, the watch was done!
The Final Result
So, there you have it, my homemade Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227J-001. It’s not perfect, of course. There are a few minor imperfections here and there, but overall, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. It looks pretty darn close to the real thing, and it keeps time just fine. Plus, it cost me way less than buying a real one. And they all looks great!
Would I recommend doing this yourself? Well, it depends. If you’re looking for a fun project and you’re not afraid of a little challenge, then go for it. But if you’re expecting to create a perfect replica that’s indistinguishable from the original, then you’re probably going to be disappointed. It’s a lot of work, and it requires a lot of patience and attention to detail.
